Do we have to mention the little start-up cost and the money you can make if you get serious about it?
We’re sure you’ve come across moms who run successful blogs and have heard all the good things they have to say about it. There’s nothing like a good success story, and that’s what got me motivated to beginning blogging too.
But since I don’t want you to forever remain at that ‘I wish I could- ‘ stage, I’m here to show you exactly how to start a mom blog!
I hope my experience can help you learn how to launch your own site from scratch and join the thousands of moms who are making it big on the internet. Ready? Let’s go!
Starting a Blog
Before I go any further, I would like to assure you of one thing. Starting a mom blog is not hard.
Many moms without any technical knowledge about website design or any of that computer jargon have successfully created their blogs and are making it big.
If you have a passion and something you would like to share with your fellow moms, then you’re good to go.
By the end of this article, you’ll see exactly how easy it is to start a blog and keep it running. I trust that will motivate you to stop sitting on the fence and get writing!
The reason why I’ve decided to point this out is that I know it might be hard to believe that something that can bring you tens of thousands of dollars monthly can be easy. That only a few select moms with blogging experience can make it.
But now, I’m assuring you that as long as you have the drive, you can make it too. You might be surprised at how uncomplicated it is to start a blog, create content, get an audience, and start monetizing it.
Without further ado, let me take you through 7 steps that’ll help you enjoy the blogging success that so many other mothers are.
Step 1: Choose a Niche
If you have been looking up resources about blogging, you must have come across the word niche. But it’s fine if you haven’t because I’m here to tell you what it’s all about.
Choosing a niche means deciding what topics or ideas you want to blog about. Anything from food, health, pregnancy, gardening, or parenting can be a great niche idea for a mom blog.
You can even decide to blog about how to make money from home for single moms! There are so many topics out there you can decide to tackle, and it’s all up to you!
It’s like walking into your new job and making all the decisions about what tasks and responsibilities you want to be in charge of. Because with blogging, you’re your own boss.
The secret to choosing the perfect niche is by looking for one that’s popular with single mothers. Since you’re one yourself, you must be conversant with the things that you search up a lot on the internet or in mom forums.
Perhaps you’re always worried about the best non-GMO, completely natural foods to feed your baby.
Maybe you heard somewhere that some baby products contain harmful substances, and would like to find safe ones. Choosing a niche can be as easy as deciding to look for those answers yourself, then sharing them with other mothers.
But a niche is a very wide segment. Let’s say you decide on the health niche. There are so many topics to cover, so you must be specific in order to draw the right audience.
And that’s what takes us to the next step.
Step 2: Choose Your Passion
Now that you’ve chosen a niche, you have to decide what you’re passionate about. Let’s proceed with our health niche example.
There are so many smaller segments in that niche that’ll bring you closer to a specific target audience.
You can decide to make a blog entirely dedicated to helping single moms stay fit and looking sexy while they take care of their kids and work from home.
As moms, it’s easy to neglect ourselves when we have our little ones to take care of. And a lot of mothers want to be able to look their best without neglecting their kids.
If you’re passionate about that, you can make an entire blog about all the different ways moms can stay healthy and fit. You’ll find that there are so many tips and products to introduce to them and will be surprised at how you’ll never run out of things to advise about.
Now, that’s just an example. Whichever niche you choose, try to narrow it down into one passion that’ll allow you to help other single mothers.
Why am I talking about passion?
One of the biggest benefits to mom blogging is that you get to spend your time learning and teaching others about things you’re interested in.
Don’t go for something that’ll give you sleepless night – the kids have that taken care of, and they definitely don’t need any help with it!
Blogging about something you’re personally interested in will make sure that you never feel like you’re at a 9-5 job that you absolutely hate.
Step 3: Decide on a Domain Name
What name will your blog go by? The best names are short, catchy, and memorable.
Also, ensure that it communicates what type of blog you’re running.
You can decide on a name that makes it clear that it’s a mom blog or one that resonates with the niche and passion that you’ve decided to tackle.
Your domain name is what you’ll build your blog identity on, so take your time. It’s okay if you’re having a hard time deciding.
You can get a free domain and change it later when the right name comes to you – and it will!
Step 4: Get Hosting Services
You know what you want to blog about, maybe you have even decided on your blog’s name. But there’s one more concern.
Where should you blog from?
Well, that’s as easy as finding the right hosting company for your blog. A hosting company is one that allocates space on a server to your blog so that your files, posts, and everything else that you work on are available on the internet.
There are both free and paid hosting companies to choose from. Here’s more about the two:
Free Blog Hosting
WordPress.com, Wix, Weebly, Blogger, and Medium are some of the free blog hosting services that you can use. With these, all you need to do is create a site, and you’re good to go.
Your blog will remain online without you having to pay for anything unless you decide to opt for premium plans. But the free stuff covers everything you need to start a blog.
However, I must note that if you wish to grow your blog without limits and monetize it, a free host may not be the best option for you.
With free blog hosting, you can expect the following limitations:
- You’ll not be able to customize your domain name. In the example or WordPress, you’ll have the “wordpress.com” address on your blog name, which might not look very professional.
- You’ll have to run your blog by the rules provided by your host, denying you the full freedom of mom blogging.
- You’ll have limited access to tools such as plug-ins and themes that can help you personalize your blog.
If you’re looking to blog for a long time and make money, I advise that you pay for self-hosting.
Perks of Self-Hosting Your Blog
When you pay for a hosting service, it’s called self-hosting. This means that you own your website and have complete control over how you run it.
Some of the most proficient companies that provide self-hosting services are HostGator, Bluehost, and SiteGround.
When you self host, you enjoy the following perks:
- You can fully customize your domain name. This allows you to use a URL that will not only identify your site as a professional one but also help you market your blog.
- With a self-hosted blog, you can use as many plug-ins as you want and make use of unlimited tools to customize your site.
- You’ll also have access to tools that’ll help rank your site on popular search engines like Google.
Don’t worry too much about which host to choose because you can always change it. Remember that with a self-host, the website belongs to you, so you can move it around as much as you wish.
Once you get a domain name and host, you’ll need a content management system (CMS).
A CMS makes it even easier to run your blog (keeps getting easier, doesn’t it?). The most popular is WordPress.org, which you can use on any of the hosting services mentioned here and on many others.
Why You’ll Need WordPress
WordPress.org is a free content management software that you can use to design and manage your blog.
It allows you to create pages, add blog posts, add images, and so much more. It also provides you with countless themes that you can customize as you like.
Using WordPress on your site also makes it easy to optimize it for SEO. Whether keywords or meta tags, this software readily manages these for you. This gives your site the best chance of recognition by search engines.
With WordPress, there’s little need for a website designer. This is because you’ll be able to control virtually anything on your site.
That’s unless you’re pressed for time or are very busy and need a helping hand.
I especially love how there are no limits with WordPress. I can add as many pages as I want to my site and create as many new blog posts as I need.
Even better, I can access my site through WordPress from any computer as long as I have an internet connection.
Step 5: Get a Logo
Think of any established brand, whether physical or digital, that you know of. You’ll realize that each of them has a brand logo that identifies them to both customers and strangers.
A logo is an important part of branding, and that’s why you should create one for your site. And no, this is not complicated either.
You can easily create your own logo using the following sites:
With an app like Canva, you’ll get hundreds of free logo templates and icons to work with. You’ll also get access to free fonts.
There are also paid options if you wish to widen your abilities, but there’s pretty of free stuff you can use to make an eye-catching logo.
Of course, you can choose to hire a professional logo designer to create one for you. But rest assured you can have a lot of fun making one that’s good enough without spending any money on it.
Step 6: Choose a Theme
To put it simply, your blog’s theme is the layout, fonts, and colors that you use. Things that you’ll have to think about when choosing a theme include:
- What colors do you want to associate with your blog?
- How do you want your posts to appear? In a column, grid, or multiple columns?
- How would you like your homepage to appear, and what should you include in it?
- What fonts should you use?
- What about images and videos? Will you be using them?
A good theme should make it easy for your visitors to browse your blog. Use a font that’s easy to read and fresh colors that are not overwhelming.
You should also think about how much time a page will take to load with the features that you use – a page that takes too long to load is the fastest way to lose a potential site visitor.
With the WordPress CMS, you get access to thousands of themes. Which, I must remind you, you can customize. This makes it very easy to create a suitable theme for your blog.
You can also use page builders to make your site-building process easier. Some of the popular page builder plug-ins for WordPress include Beaver Builder, WPBakery Page Builder, and Elementator.
Once you choose a theme, you’re ready to share your content with moms worldwide.
So, how do you go about that?
Step 7: Post Content
Finally, you’re at the stage that every mom blogger is excited about. I know you’re excited – I was! – and can’t wait to get that first post up and running.
If you’ve completed the first six steps, then you’re good to go. So, how do you go about posting your first post?
Before you launch that first post, make sure that you have the following in place:
- Your about us page
- Contact page
- Profile picture
- Clear blog menu
- A disclosure page
You’ll also need to prepare at least 3 pillar posts that you’ll publish at the same time on your blog. These are long, informative posts that provide a lot of answers to your audience.
A good pillar post can be at least 2000 words. This way, it’ll provide a lot of information, answer several questions, and also get a good chance of ranking well on search engines.
These posts should make clear what topic your blog will be dealing with in the future. With a good pillar post, you can start attracting readers with just a handful of blog posts.
Consistency and Quality of Your Posts
My mom blog has been up for four years now, and I can confidently tell you that consistency is key in making successful posts.
Create a posting schedule that allows you to create and share new content as frequently as possible. Depending on how much time you have after taking care of your kids, this can be as frequent as weekly posts, bi-monthly, or whichever schedule suits you.
Failing to post for a long stretch can cost you dedicated readers and affect your visibility on search engines.
Besides consistency, you also have to ensure that each post is of high quality. This simply means that it should be able to serve the needs of your readers.
Let me assure you that as long as you provide the answers they’re looking for, they’ll be back.
Now, everything is done, and your blog is up and running. But you wonder, “how does that make me money?” I’ll show you.
How to Make Money with Your Blog
There are many ways you can monetize your blog. Most of these methods will make you money while you sleep, and is there a better way to earn?
Here are some of the avenues most moms exploit to make money out of their blogs, and which you should consider too:
Affiliate Marketing
As an affiliate marketer, you’ll be required to promote a certain product or service with the aim of getting your readers to buy it. If they make a purchase through your affiliate links, you earn a commission from the company you’re marketing.
Amazon, Clickbank, eBay, and Shopify are some of the most popular companies that offer tons of affiliate marketing programs.
Doing product reviews is the best way to get your readers clicking and buying from these sites. Each of the products that you review should be useful to your target audience, in the same way as your blog content.
Selling Services
A lot of individuals and companies are looking for online services that your blog can qualify you to provide.
Examples are working as a freelance writer, health coach, online coach, or a virtual assistant. These are all ventures that can earn you thousands of dollars monthly.
Online Products
Are there any products that you make which your readers could use? Your blog can also host your online store to sell them.
These products can range from anything like personal care items, supplements, to digital items like e-books and online courses.
These are just three of the several money-making methods available to you. You can also earn through selling Ad space and writing sponsored posts.
How to Get Blog Traffic
Your blog is available to the world, you have published some posts, and you’re aware of how to make money from it. But at the end of the day, how much traffic you get is what determines your blog’s level of success.
Here are some tips on how to bring readers to your blog and keep them there.
Utilize Email Marketing
Email marketing is a strategy that can help you bring traffic to your site and retain old customers and readers.
Create an email list through which you can send short reminders about products and services. You can also notify your readers about a new blog post that you think is helpful to them.
If they like it, they’ll click and visit your site. Email marketing is also an effective way to inform your readers about offers on your site.
There are many email auto-responder services that’ll take care of this task for you. With the best, you can send tons of emails to thousands of subscribers without spending a lot of time on it.
Some of the most notable email autoresponders you can give a try are Aweber, Get Response, Constant Contact, and MailerLite.
Interact with other Blogs
Read other mom blogs and comment on their posts. Interacting with other moms on other blogs is one way of bringing readers over to yours.
Of course, don’t just go and drop links. That’s plain rude and unprofessional. Make sure to contribute your opinion about the post, and readers will find their way to yours.
Share your blog posts on social media platforms such as Facebook or Instagram. Facebook groups and forums that are niche-specific are a great way to get the word out that your blog contains the answers that many moms are looking for.
Conclusion
Starting a mom blog can be as easy and fun as you want to make it. You don’t need to spend a lot of money like you would to begin a brick and mortar store.
You can choose to just spend a few dollars on hosting and think about other features as your blog grows.
Remember to make decisions about content, themes, and products or services to sell with your reader in mind.
If you set each goal to help you, readers, in a certain way, then your blog will go a long way.
